Anna van Riel is Byron's newest emerging singer/songwriter. After making the decision to flap her wings and prove that Kiwi's can actually fly, van Riel moved to Byron Bay in February this year to pursue her budding music career. Her recent endeavors include two successful New Zealand tours and a solo performance at The Confluence Music Festival in the Himalayas. She has taken her beloved guitar (Livingston) and ukulele (Sausage) far and wide and has performed twice for Prince Albert of Monaco. Anna's sound has been likened to a combination of Joni Mitchell and Natalie Merchant. Be sure to check her out.
Anna van Riel was born a singer-storyteller, her career in fact started when she was just three years old, when she started making up songs and belting them out to whoever would listen! At the age of seven Anna's parents bought her a small Casio keyboard and her passion for music flourished. When she was 14, Anna's mother taught her three chords on the guitar, these were enough for her to write her first song called 'Lucy Came to Tea'. A year later she won the local talent quest, performing an original song!
After successfully expanding into acting, Anna instead chose to move to Sydney and immerse herself in the Open Mic scene, writing music and collaborating with other artists.
Anna is working through a Bachelor of Music and has extensively toured in Australia and NZ. Her music has taken her to places including Europe, North America, and India. She has entertained a wide range of audiences, from school kids to Prince Albert of Monaco. Anna has written and recorded two LPs: 'Einey Meiney Miney Mo' (2008) and 'Solar Panel' (2009) and recently supported successful NZ artists including Tim Guy, Age Pryor, Luke Hurley, and Karen Hunter.
Anna has an unparalleled ability to connect with her audience through meaningful lyrics and astute observations, catapulted through her stunning voice and captivating music.
